Your year sounds like mine. I was so excited about canning and putting up enough food out of my garden for us and our children that when it didn't produce as hoped, I was crushed. A tremendous amount of rain, first, and then I met with health issues and ended up in the hospital and that is when it decided to produce, only for a couple of weeks and then was done. It is hard to do it alone, as it is but, even harder when the weather works against you. So, like you, we will try again next year and hope for a better turn out.

I know exactly where you are coming from. I have Bantams and White Legorns, also a couple of California Dots. The Bantams I have raised since birth and the others since a week old. My Bantams are a year old and have laid only a few here and there and my leggorns are 6 months and have just begun. I get all excited when my animals and chickens do something new. Today I collected 22 eggs out of 32 hens. This is the most I have collected at one time. It was great! If you would like to know more or read about my animals. check out my site at www.outaroundthebarn.com./farm-life-blog.

I live within 100 km of the Darlington Nuclear Power Plant in Ontario, Canada - will trade for safe, clean, waste free Wind Power any time, day or night, just call collect, deal in 24 hours guaranteed! I used to live too close to the Sudbury Ontario "Super Stack" another great monument to a resource flow being wasted, and thought I did myself a favor by moving here - no such luck! The province of Ontario is expanding "Nuclear Power" since they have no oil, wind, solar, tidal, or coal to exploit, and mines, chocked full of uranium already discovered. Just imagine, a Chernobyl in the heartland of industrial Canada, like I do, nightly, and you will learn to love your windmills, and live frugally, wasting none of that pure clean, perpetual, or renewable if you prefer, power, a Godsend to be certain. Count yourself lucky not to be in my position, one human error from Armageddon, the fission fire lit and burning furiously day and night, and waste piling up as we speak in water filled chambers waiting for a wild eyed, crazed, terrorist or nut-case! Give me the Wind solution every time over this!

We don't have that much room either but the chickens fit in well :)

This years attempts should hopefully work out better and we should hopefully have a greenhouse by the summertime so next year should be better again. Living just outside Glasgow I know your pain with the climate and funnily enough that's exactly what happened to most of my peppers :(

Hi. Found my way here via LJ. Great reading!

We're trying to do something similar but without livestock (no space). Had successful experiments last summer with sups, carrot and "random" seeds so looking forward to planting more this year.

Not had much success with peppers and chilli's yet. They have to grow inside (Central Scottish climate!) but every time we get fruit the green flies appear. Grrr! Determined to make it work this time round!

Good luck!

I've no idea what price they went for as we left in disgust at how the auction was being run long before the ex-batts were up for sale. Minimum bid was £5 per lot of 6 hens though I think but with that many birds up for sale I'd be surprised if they all sold even at that price.
